Intro to White Water Kayaking 2024

About the course

Ever wanted to try white water kayaking? Our summer course is great fun and is an opportunity like no other.

We’d love to invite you to our summer 2024 Intro to Kayaking course and our August dates are now open for booking!

Join us and learn:

  • How to stop a kayak moving (easier)
  • How to go backwards (harder)
  • How to go forwards in a straight line (infuriating)
  • Edging, leaning & other essentials to take forward into White Water!

Intro & Welcome – Thursday 1st August: 7 – 9pm

Pool Session – Tuesday 6th August: 7 – 9pm

Canal 2 – Thursday 8th August: 7 – 9pm

Canal 3 – Thursday 15th August:- 7 – 9pm – (provisional date)

Canal Sessions are based at our club site: 16-34 Graham Street, London N1 8JX, which is situated between Angel and Old Street.

Pool sessions are done at: Britannia Leisure Centre 40, Hyde Road, Greater London N1 5JU

In the first session, you’ll learn:

  • Who we are, how the club works & how to use our canal
  • If you’d like to join us, we’ll then get you out on the water!

You will then start on your journey to kayaking (and perhaps on to white water). Wooo!!!

Future dates continue at the canal site and in the Pool at Britannia Leisure Centre.

Tuition is free throughout the course, but we will ask you to cover:

  • Membership (£90/ year or £45 for concessions, event deposit deductible)
  • Pool sessions (£10 a session, but well worth it!)

This will be super fun and we can’t wait to meet you.

Experienced kayaker? No problem; drop us a message after you book and we’ll talk through how to get you back in a boat.

The Introduction to White Water Kayaking course is designed for adults (18+) who have little or no previous experience of paddling kayaks, but who want to get onto moving water by the end of the course.

Courses run through spring/ summer. You begin by learning how to control your boat on the Regents canal and at pool sessions, before progressing to moving water and ultimately your first taste of white water!

Ability

The course is suitable for all ages (18+) and abilities. It can however, be quite strenuous, so you may find it useful to do some other form of exercise before the course starts. Whatever your age or ability, you must be able to swim 50 meters in light clothing.

Instructors

All of our instructors are experienced white water canoeists and kayakers. Many of them joined the club as a result of learning to paddle on a Regents Introduction to White Water Kayaking course, so they will be sympathetic to any fears or concerns you may have.

They are all volunteers and no one gets paid for their time.

Further training

The club runs several trips aimed specifically at new white water paddlers who have completed this course and who want to learn more. These follow up trips are a great way to learn more and have fun on the rivers! We advertise such trips on our calendar page and in our regular members’ email newsletter.

Mailing list

If you wish to go onto the mailing list for future courses not currently open for booking, please subscribe here.

If you wish to learn to kayak on white water you may also wish to check out other providers, listed on our links page. Glenmore Lodge and Plas y Brenin, although not local, are both highly recommended. The Lee Valley White Water Centre is also a good place to get tuition, and is fairly easy to get to. For a list of other London clubs see www.canoelondon.com.

If you have any questions regarding these courses, that are not answered here or on our ‘frequently asked questions page’ please contact our club safety and training officer.
