Regents Canoe Club organises fortnightly pool sessions at Britannia Leisure Centre, 40 Hyde Road, N1. Each session runs from 7:00pm to 9.00pm. Cost is £10.00 per session (£5.00 per session for full time students and unemployed – proof of eligibility may be requested) – members only. There is no pre-booking. You cannot join the club at a pool session. We take payment for the session by debit or credit card.
Nearest Tube is Old Street or buses along New North Road or Kingsland Road will take you there. Parking is available at the centre (give the receipt to reception and you can get your money back). Bikes can be locked outside but should be locked securely (preferably double locked) as this is a bad area for bike thefts.
Boats and paddles are available at the pool and it is also okay to bring your own boat and paddle as long as they are clean. Helmets are also available if you wish to use one. If a session is popular you may have to share equipment with other members.
Experienced members of the club will be attendance and will help and advise those looking to improve their skills, but if the session is busy we cannot guarantee we will be able to help everyone. Due to the limited space in the pool this is not the place to practice ‘extreme’ play moves.
Capsize and spray deck tests can be done at the start of the pool session. One of the instructors will be happy to assist you.
If you get to the pool early, please give any cleaners room to do their jobs and please clear the pool promptly at the end of the session as the lifeguard needs to be elsewhere.
At the pool we suggest you wear a pair of shorts or leggings over a swimming costume, as the sides of the boats can rub on bare legs. You may not be in the pool all the time, so a thermal top is also a good idea, to keep you warm. Tops made of artificial fibres such as polyester or nylon are much better at retaining heat than cotton. We also recommend that you bring wet area foot ware (possibly neoprene socks) as the tiling in the boat storage are is breaking up.
Don’t forget to bring a towel and a plastic bag (for your wet gear).
For those seeking liquid refreshment after the session there is often a trip to a nearby pub.
