Canoe
and kayak club in Islington, London N1
Regents is
a very active and friendly club based in Islington, London. The
club runs beginner's courses and organises regular trips to white
water rivers as well as the occasional trip to gentler flat water
locations.
Some members also participate
in slalom and river racing events and occasionally head off to the
coast in search of surf.
Club nights
The canoe club meets
Monday and Thursday nights from 6:30 to 8:30pm on the City Road
Basin of the Regents canal at Graham Street, London N1. For details

The club is not usually open on Bank Holidays.
Facilities
Boats, paddles and bouyancy
aids are available for use on club nights, changing rooms and hot
showers are also available. The club owns a good deal of equipment
which can be hired outside of club hours by club members. A slalom
course is set out on the City Road Basin. Members have free use
of all equipment and facilities during club opening hours.
How to find us
You will find us 10 minutes
walk from Angel Tube (Islington) or Old Street Tube (both on Northern
Line); From Angel head south east on City Rd, towards the City.
From Old Street head north west along City Road, towards Islington.
Graham street is about 1/2 mile from both stations. The club is
50 yds along Graham street on the right. The club shares the facilities
of Islington Boat Club.

Visiting the club
Non club members
are welcome to visit the club for a 'drop in' session on Monday
evenings (6:30 to 8:30pm). Cost is only £2.00 and there is
no need to book in advance. You must be able to swim and aged over
18. Bring a change of clothes for paddling in, trainers or sandals
for wearing when on the water and a towel.
A Duty Officer will usually
be on duty at the club on Monday evenings to run the drop in sessions.
They can show you around, kit you out, and if you need assistance
they will accompany you on the water and explain the basic paddle
strokes etc.
Taster
paddlesport sessions - new for 2008
Regents Canoe Club is offering four, separate taster paddlesport
sessions at the club in the following dates:
Monday
30th June - gone
Monday 28th July - session is full
Monday 18th August
Monday 29th September
During the two hour session (6.30 - 8.30 pm) you will be introduced
to canoes and/or kayaks, shown the key features, safe use, and
guided in how to manoeuvre your craft on flat water. These sessions
are aimed at adults over 18 years of age with no prior experience.
All instruction is by club members, many of whom have a wide
range of qualifications and lots of practical experience.
The cost of the session is £10 (payable on the day) which
covers all equipment and coaching. You should bring a towel,
clothes which you don't mind getting wet (heavy cotton clothing,
especially jeans are not suitable) and appropriate footwear,
ideally old thin-soled trainers, sports sandals, or wetsuit
type bootees.

Please note that we cannot
accept group visits. The drop in sessions are intended to give individuals
a first taste of kayaking. All assistance is provided by unpaid
volunteers. If you are seeking professional instruction or wish
to take a group kayaking, please see our links
section where you will find several organisations offering excellent
kayaking tuition. There are also links to companies providing canoe
and kayak hire.
Non club members can
also visit the club on Thursday evenings (6:30 to 8:30pm) but note
that we will not have a specific Duty Officer available to offer
assistance. Regents beginners' classes also take place on many Thursday
evenings, which means that there will a very limited selection of
free boats and other equipment.
If you wish to make repeated
visits you will be expected to join the club, which currently costs
£40/year.

Children
To visit or join Regents Canoe Club you must be over 18 years old.
Children and teenagers wishing to kayak should contact Islington
Boat Club who are based at the same address as Regents.
